Brisbane’s Northside eating options just got a whole lot more interesting with the opening of a new dining, lifestyle and entertainment precinct at Westfield Chermside
Walking around the restaurants doesn’t feel like a visit to a shopping centre at all. It’s more like a wander down a popular food alleyway or settling in at a resort-style restaurant hub.
The options are many, from fast food that flies out to fill hungry tummies to restaurants and bars where you can relax over a stylish, multi-course meal. More than 20 new outlets have opened in this new section which includes a sprinkling of retailers as well.
The biggest surprise is overhead, a huge dome they call The Urchin, because it looks like one. That’s a sea urchin, not a scruffy child. Soaring above the dining plaza, it’s white walls are bathed in colour that changes with a light show at night. The effect is quite magical, and many visitors were captivated.
The Banfield Street end has a sub-tropical feel with lush plantings around ponds. Strategically placed chairs mean you can sit back and enjoy the resort-like view..
My top 10 places to try first
1. If there’s one thing I always need to tackle a shopping centre, it’s a good cup of coffee. I’m making a stop at Archer Speciality Coffee top of the list and maybe one of their toasties
2. The décor at Kinn+ Derm is enough to get me through the door, but I’m also keen to try their ancient Thai cuisine
3. Hermosa, so I can up the anticipation for my trip to Spain.
4. Le Bon Choix for the same reason. French pastries….
5. The Ramen Soup made with 12-hour super stock and Japanese Rolls filled with wagyu at Motto Motto
6. Daniel Ridgeway’s Bin 931 because he’s a great chef
7. Betty’s Burger & Concrete Co because I’m addicted to the flame-grilled flavour of their beef patties

Child’s play at Chermside
If you think that won’t work for me because my children will be bored, think again. There is plenty of space to move around in this open-air section. Expect grass (artificial) covered mounds for running around, play equipment for climbing and even a red tunnel for small folk to crawl through.
Focus on the dining precinct experience, by approaching from Blanfield Street. Even better, spring for valet parking and hand over your keys to the parking attendant at the pop-up valet available Thursday to Saturday from 6 pm to 11 pm in front of the dining precinct. At $5 it won’t break the bank and will give you a luxe feeling. Why not?
Where is it?
Find Westfield Chermside on the corner of Gympie and Hamilton Roads at Chermside about 10 km from Brisbane’s CBD. There are three hours of free parking at the centre.
The easiest access to this new dining precinct is via the second level of the red carpark. Just take the travelator down and follow the signs.
