To market, to market - New Caledonia's Port Moselle Markets in Noumea

Find it all fresh and fabulously tropical at the sprawling Port Moselle Markets, Baie de la Moselle, Noumea.

Shop here, eat like a local and cut your catering costs at the same time. With the array of tropical fruits, crisp baguettes, French cheese and fresh local seafood available, you'll dine like a king with buttery croissants and steaming hot coffee.

Most of the market is located under covered pavillions topped with blue tiled roofs.  There are butchers and bakers but no candlestick makers but you will fish seafood straight of the boat near the harbor side of the market.

Locally grown fruits include papaya, pineapple, bananas and passionfruit and some of the largest avocados I have seen.

Here's a few French phrases that are useful for market shopping -

  • I'd like to buy...   le voudrais achter
  • What's in that dish?    Quels sont les kel son lay ingredients?
  • How much is it? C'est combien?

This is the largest avocado I've seen.

New Caledonia loves food and they have a festival for that celebrates just about everything they eat! There's one for yams around mid March, ferns and lobsters in April, an avocado and a stag and prawn festival in May, and a giant omelette festival around Easter. In June it's a cheese festival and  the vanilla festival happens in October. The Wajuju Festival in November celebrates snapper.

The Market is also popular with local craftspeople who sell clothes, jewellery, flowers and other fun objects.

And if there was any doubt that you are in a place inextricably linked to France, this vehicle in the carpark should answer the question.

The Port Moselle Markets are open daily from 5am to 11am except for Mondays.

Arc en Ciel include a stop at the markets in some of their tours.

You'll find self-catering apartment accommodation at Château Royal Beach Resort and Spa and Hilton Noumea La Promenade Residences.
