Plum Tucker, Red Hill

Living within walking distance of life's necessities is a boon in today's busy world.

For me the list of necessities includes a good coffee, a well-stocked deli, bakery and butcher, a cafe/eatery which serves good food at a great price and a park for dog walking.  Oh, and a cupcake or two would also be grand.

I've hit the jackpot at Ashgrove with nearly all that and more within a 10 minute walk, including local eatery Plum Tucker high on Enoggera Terrace at Red Hill, nearly next door to Botanica and Couverture & Co.

Some of you will remember it as Cockadoodle Cafe or even further back, as sadly missed Olivetto's. Plum Tucker has incorporated the best of both these much loved eateries and created a casual cafe with a menu full of easy-eating favourites.  We often head here on a Friday or Saturday night when cooking seems too hard and their Vietnamese bun cha is beckoning.

Last Friday I had a very good reason not to cook - it was my birthday.  Normally I plan an escape for my birthday but this year I decided to celebrate with a few friends with the theme 'Life is too short not to celebrate another birthday."

So a group of about 15 family and friends arrived at Plum Tucker and headed up the stairs to a delightfully decorated room (thank you Matt and Kate) for a fun night of eating, drinking and talking.

We started with a trio of dips and some edamane and then the night just kept on getting better.  Here's what we ate.

Edamane with rock salt

Bangers and mash

Ravioli with pumpkin, spinach and pine nuts

Chorizo fettucine

Beef burger and chips

The night finished with a cake from JudyC Cakes.

Bottom line: Dinner prices range from $16.50 to $19.
Best tip: Make it your local too!
